Most gutter failures announce themselves in three ways. The run sags visibly in the middle. Water is still sitting in the trough days after the last storm. Or there is a dark stripe down the fascia and the siding under one corner. None of those necessarily means the gutter is finished. They usually mean the pitch has drifted, the fasteners have let go, or a joint has opened, and all three are repairable without a truck full of new coil.
Resloping is the part homeowners have never heard of and the part that fixes the most problems. Pitch has to be consistent across the whole run for the water to keep moving to the outlet. When one section settles, water stands there, standing water is real weight, and that weight pulls the section down further. It compounds quietly. Catching it while it is still a sag rather than a tear is the difference between a morning of work and a replacement.
A gutter tells the truth during a storm and lies when it is dry. Where it overflows, where it drips and where water stands afterward point straight at what is wrong.
A level or a string line along the run shows where the fall goes flat or reverses. That is usually the same spot as the sag, the standing water and the algae line.
The section gets brought back to consistent fall and fastened into sound material. Where the fascia has gone soft, that gets repaired first or nothing will hold.
Miters and outlets get cleaned and sealed rather than patched over, then the run gets flooded with a hose to confirm the water leaves instead of pooling.
Repair pricing tracks how much of the run is involved and how hard it is to reach. Resloping a single stretch on a one-story front is a small job. The same work on a two-story elevation over a slope, where ladders and staging take longer to set than the work takes to do, is not. Sealing a couple of corners is minor. Finding that the fascia behind them has been wet for years turns it into carpentry, which is the usual reason a repair quote lands above expectations. Adding a downspout or moving a discharge point while somebody is already up there is usually the cheapest upgrade on the list.
It depends on whether the problem is the gutter or the way it was hung. Drifted pitch, loose fasteners and leaking corners are all repairs. Material that has split, corroded through in several places, or been bent by falling ice along most of a run is a replacement. If the system was also undersized for the roof from the beginning, replacement gets you a size correction that no repair can.
Because water is standing there. A low spot collects water, water is heavy, and the weight works on the hangers every time it rains until the low spot gets lower. It is a loop that feeds itself. Fixing the sag without fixing the pitch just resets the clock, which is why resloping is the actual repair and rehanging alone is a patch.
It is a symptom worth taking seriously. Water that does not leave means the fall is wrong somewhere, and beyond the sagging it causes, a wet trough holds debris and grit in place instead of flushing it toward the outlet. That accelerates everything else. A properly pitched run is close to empty after a storm passes, apart from the last bit at the low end.
Usually because sealant was applied over a dirty or still-moving joint. Corners flex as the material expands and contracts, so a bead laid on top of grit and old sealant lets go quickly. A proper repair cleans the miter back, re-secures it so it is not working against itself, and then seals it. If it has been resealed repeatedly, the joint itself may need to be remade.
Formed on site from a coil, so a straight run carries no joints except at the corners and the outlets. That matters, because joints are where leaks concentrate. Size and downspout count get decided by your roof, not by habit.
