Almost everything written about gutters is about the gutter: the profile, the material, the color, whether it is seamless. Almost none of it is about the question that decides whether the system was worth installing, which is where the water goes after it leaves the bottom of the downspout. That is not an accident. The trough is the visible part, so it is the part that gets sold, photographed and compared between quotes. Nobody takes a picture of the spot where the downspout empties.

But consider what the system is actually doing. It gathers the rain that lands on a large sloped surface, concentrates it into a few narrow paths, and delivers all of it to a handful of specific points on the ground. Before there were gutters, that water spread out along the whole drip line. Now it arrives in a few concentrated streams. If those points are badly chosen, a gutter has not solved a water problem. It has concentrated one and aimed it, which is arguably worse than having no gutters at all.

Away means away from the foundation, specifically

The real job of a gutter is to move roof water away from the foundation. Every other benefit, keeping the entry dry, keeping the siding cleaner, keeping the flower beds from being pounded flat, is secondary to that one. Which is why the most common failure in the whole trade is not a leak or a clog. It is a downspout that empties within a step of the wall, into ground that either does not drain or slopes back toward the house.

Water discharged next to a foundation is a well-known cause of wet basement complaints and of settlement, and the reason it goes unnoticed for so long is that nothing dramatic happens on any single day. It soaks in, the ground beside the wall stays wetter than the ground away from it, and the effect accumulates across seasons. By the time it becomes visible indoors it is somebody else's specialty and a much larger conversation. On the outside it was an extension and an afternoon.

The grade decides how far is far enough

There is no universal distance, and anybody who quotes one is repeating a rule of thumb rather than looking at your yard. What matters is where the water goes once it lands. On a lot that falls away from the house sharply, a short extension onto that slope is genuinely enough, because gravity finishes the job. On flat ground, the same extension just moves the puddle slightly and the water soaks in a couple of steps further out, which is not the same as leaving. The question is never how long the extension is. It is whether the water keeps traveling after it lands.

The worst case, and it is more common than you would expect, is ground that slopes back toward the house. Settled backfill, a raised bed built up against the wall, a patio that has heaved, a new lawn graded by eye. In those situations the extension is delivering water to a spot from which it flows straight back to where you did not want it. The fix is either carrying the water past that point entirely or dealing with the grade, and it is worth knowing which one you are looking at.

Buried line solves the distance, and adds a maintenance item

When the water has to go a long way, or when surface extensions keep getting knocked off by mowers, kids and snow shovels, carrying it underground is the tidy answer. Pipe takes the discharge from each downspout and releases it at a point well clear of the house, ideally somewhere lower that the water can leave on its own. Done properly it is invisible, which is a large part of the appeal, and it stops the seasonal ritual of putting the extension back on after every mow.

The tradeoff worth understanding is that you have moved a visible system out of sight. Fine debris still gets down the downspout, and over years it settles in the pipe. A buried line with no way to inspect or clear it can quietly back up, and a backed-up line puts water at the base of the downspout, which is precisely the situation you paid to avoid. Ask how it will be cleared before it is put in, not after, and make sure somebody can find the discharge end again in five winters.

Winter changes the answer

Every discharge decision gets reconsidered once the water can freeze. Roof melt does not wait for a rainstorm, so a downspout keeps producing water on sunny days in the middle of winter, and where that water spreads out is where it turns to ice. A discharge point across a walkway, a driveway apron or the top of a set of steps is fine for most of the year and a genuine hazard for the rest of it, refreezing in the same place every night until spring.

The same logic applies to buried line. Water that has to travel through pipe near the surface can freeze inside it, and once the line is blocked the downspout backs up and overflows at the top of the drop or spills out at the foundation. It is one of the reasons a surface extension, ugly as it is, still has a place in some spots. Ideally the winter plan gets discussed while the drainage is being designed rather than discovered in January.

How to check yours in one storm

You do not need anybody's help to find out whether your drainage works. Wait for a real rain, put on a coat, and walk the perimeter while it is coming down. Look at each downspout in turn. Is water coming out of the bottom of it in a strong steady stream, or trickling while the gutter above overflows somewhere else? Where does the stream go once it lands, and is it heading away from the house or spreading against it?

Then look at the gutters themselves. Water going over the front lip while it rains tells you about capacity, clogs or pitch. Water dripping down the fascia behind the gutter tells you about a joint. A dark stripe on the siding under one corner tells you where the last few years of storms went. If you cannot wait for weather, a garden hose in the far end of each run does most of the same work in an afternoon, and it is the same test a good contractor will run when the job is finished.

Can I just add extensions myself?

For surface extensions on a one-story house, yes, and it is one of the highest-value hours you can spend on a home. The parts are simple and the test is simple: pour water into it and watch where it goes. What to be careful about is where you send it, since a neighbor's yard, a walkway or the low corner of your own lot are not improvements over the original problem.

Should downspouts connect into a landscape drain?

Sometimes it works well, and sometimes it overwhelms a system that was sized for a different job. Roof water arrives in a much bigger surge than the ground-level seepage many yard drains were built to handle. If it backs up, the water comes out at the lowest point in the run, which may be right beside the house. It is worth being confident about where the line goes and what else feeds it first.

Is it worth doing this if my gutters are old?

Usually yes, because discharge is the cheapest part of the system to improve and it affects the outcome most. An old gutter that catches water and delivers it well away from the house is doing more good than a new one that drops it at the corner. If the gutters are due for replacement anyway, that is the ideal moment to move discharge points, since the labor is already on site.
