One Downspout Per Elevation Is a Starting Point, Not a Plan

Plenty of established Sandy homes are wide, with long straight stretches of gutter and a single downspout at the end of each. That layout is easy to install and easy to look at, and it asks one outlet to move everything a large roof plane collects. Water has to travel the whole length of the run before it can leave, and while it travels it is filling the trough behind it. The far end fills first, spills at the corner, and you get a wet stripe down the wall in exactly one place every storm. Nothing is broken. There is one door for a lot of traffic.

Outlet count comes from roof area and pitch, the same math that sets gutter size. A larger home in Salt Lake County usually has more roof feeding each run than the elevation suggests, because rooflines on those houses are rarely simple. Adding a second outlet partway along a long stretch cuts the distance water must travel and takes the pressure off the corner. It is a modest change with a visible result, and it is a far smaller job than replacing gutters that were never the thing going wrong in the first place.

Upper Roofs That Empty Onto Lower Ones

Multi-level homes stack their drainage. An upper gutter collects, sends water down a short downspout, and that downspout discharges onto the lower roof, where it runs down and enters the lower gutter as one concentrated stream. The lower run now handles its own area plus everything from above, all arriving at a single point. That is why one section overflows while the rest of the house behaves perfectly. It is not exactly a defect. It is a layout that works until volume goes up, and then it is reliably the first place to fail on the house.

There are reasonable ways to handle it. Carry the upper downspout all the way to grade instead of stopping it on the lower roof. Add an outlet directly beneath where the upper flow lands so the water has somewhere to go the moment it arrives. Increase the lower run's size if the area genuinely warrants it. Which of those makes sense depends on the elevation and how it reads from the street, and it is a conversation worth having in person rather than settling from a phone quote based on footage alone.

Pitch, Hangers and Why the Middle Sags

A gutter is supposed to fall consistently toward its outlet. Not much fall, but continuous. When it does not, water stands in the low spot instead of leaving, and standing water is heavy. Weight pulls on hangers, hangers pull on fascia, the sag deepens, and now the low spot holds more than it did. That cycle is why a run that looked fine for years develops a visible dip and a puddle that never quite dries. You can spot it from the driveway once you know to sight along the line of the gutter against the roof edge.

On long runs the margin is thinner, because pitch has to stay true over more distance and hanger spacing has to account for the weight the run will actually carry when it is full and moving. If your gutters already sag, adding a guard makes the situation worse by putting more load on a system that is losing its argument with gravity. The order of operations here is boring and it matters. Get pitch and support right first, get the outlet count and placement right second, and only then decide whether guards make any sense on your particular lot and your particular roof.

The answer comes from roof area and pitch, not from gutter length alone, so it takes a look at the roof above the run.

Why does one section of my gutter dip in the middle?

Standing water. Once pitch goes flat or backward in a spot, water stays there, and it is heavier than people expect. That weight works on the hangers and the fascia behind them, the dip deepens, and it holds still more. Re-hanging that section to a consistent fall usually solves it, but check the fascia at the same time, since the sag may have started with soft wood rather than bad pitch.

Should an upper downspout empty onto a lower roof?

It is common and not automatically wrong, but it concentrates flow into one point of the lower gutter. If the lower section overflows in the same place every time, that is what is happening. Running the upper downspout down to grade, or adding an outlet right where the water lands, spreads the load out. Which option fits depends on how the elevation looks and how much roof is feeding it.
